 Hello,

During the 2017 session, the Nevada Legislature passed Assembly Bill 474, the Controlled Substances Abuse Prevention Act. The law is effective January 1, 2018. One section of AB 474 concerns Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) and mandatory Continuing Education. Specifically, NRS 632.2375 was amended to require APRNs who are registered to dispense controlled substances pursuant to NRS 453.231 to complete 2 hours of Continuing Education related to the misuse and abuse of controlled substances. The Nevada State Board of Pharmacy, as the Board charged with interpreting and enforcing NRS chapter 453 has interpreted AB 474, Section 30, to apply to all APRNs who have the authority to prescribe controlled substances.

Therefore, all APRNs who have the authority to prescribe controlled substances shall complete 2 hours of Continuing Education related to the misuse and abuse of controlled substances. An attestation about the completion of this Continuing Education requirement will now be included in all applications for renewal of APRN licensure.

Thank you,
